AIESEC (from the French acronym for the International Association of Students in Economic and Business Management) is an international student-run organization which offers approximately 5,000 paid internships each year in business and other fields in over 100 countries. Site has links to chapters worldwide. Note that application for AIESEC internships is possible only through campus chapters.

Envirolink: The Online Environmental Community, www.envirolink.org. Site has links to hundreds of environmental organizations. There are good links for finding jobs and internships; however, the site does want you to sign up and become a member before using their resources.

SD Gateway (Sustainable Development), www.sdgateway.net. Not only environmental, this outstanding site will be of interest to people in a number of fields, from policy and international relations to development and nongovernmental organizations. Searches using “internship” or desired location bring up plenty of internationally-related positions.

American Medical Student Association, www.amsa.org/global/. AMSA’s site lists overseas internship and volunteer programs, including options for premed and other health sciences—see International Health Opportunities section. Site includes an excellent online guide to fundraising, Creative Funding Guide, useful for all students.

Friends of World Nursing assists American and Candian RN's in securing international assignments; www.fowt.com.

Global Health Council (formerly National Council for International Health), www.globalhealth.org. NCIH is one of the main professional associations for U.S. organizations working in international health. It publishes (in hard copy only) The Directory of Global Health which lists the health fields and locations in which each organization is active, and Internship and Volunteer Opportunities. Web site includes an online article on “Career Opportunities in Global Health”, information for students and internships, and extensive links to member organizations.

Minority International Research Training Grant (MIRT), www.nih.gov/fic/programs/mirt.html. Program of the Fogarty International Center, National Institutes of Health, sends minority undergraduates and medical students abroad to do health-related research.

Social Work and Social Services Jobs Online, Washington Univ., George Warren Brown School of Social Work,www.gwbweb.wustl.edu/jobs by Carol Doelling. This outstanding site has specific job listings and automatic links to other job web sites. Search provisions make it easy to find jobs by type of work or location, including a good number of overseas listings.

NAFSA: Association of International Educators, www.nafsa.org. The largest and most helpful professional association for those interested in careers in international educational exchange. NAFSA publishes a hard-copy Job Bulletin, and also announces jobs through email lists which can be subscribed to from their web site.

APSIA (Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs), www.apsia.org. These are some of the top graduate schools offering advanced degrees in preparation for international careers. Web site links to these schools, but offers little information about international work—try the Career Services offices of the individual schools.

U.S. Department of State, www.state.gov/employment. How to work for the U.S. diplomatic services. The State Department offers 1,000 internships annually, student work programs, and special fellowship/internship programs such as the Foreign Affairs Fellowship and Fascell Fellowship. Site also shows how to apply for career positions.

UN and International Organization Employment Information (site of the U.S. Department of State), www.state.gov/p/io/empl/11079.htm. An extensive overview of employment with the UN and other multigovernment international organizations, with links and job announcements.

The WWW Virtual Library: International Affairs Resources, www.etown.edu/vl/. While not designed as an employment site, this web site has the most comprehensive set of links for international relations.

Woodrow Wilson International Fellowship Foundation, www.woodrow.org/public-policy. Information on several multi-year scholarship-internship programs for students, especially women and minorities, interested in careers in international affairs.

DevNetJobs.org, DevNetJobs.org. Jobs in International Development and Environment Sector. DevNetJobs.org lists and distributes jobs/ fellowship announcements arising in the International Environment and Development . sector, for the benefit of the international development community.

Idealist, www.idealist.org. This site’s claim of tens of thousands of organizations “under one roof” says it all. Excellent search provisions give useful results using “internship” or “volunteer.” Also has lists of volunteer, internship and job opportunities. Search possible by country, type of work, and many other variables. The “browse by country” section lists organizations according to their work focus. Site includes organizations worldwide, not only U.S.-based ones.

InterAction: American Council for Voluntary International Action, www.interaction.org. InterAction is a coalition of over 150 private, U.S.-based voluntary organizations engaged in international humanitarian efforts, including disaster relief, sustainable development, refugee assistance, advocacy, and education. Their web site includes links to their members and an online Guide to Volunteer Opportunities (most of which require professional skills). InterAction also publishes in hard copy Global Work (organizations seeking volunteers), InterAction Member Profiles, and Monday Developments (biweekly job announcements).
