American-Scandinavian Foundation: 212-879-9779, www.amscan.org. Web site lists both study and work programs. Nonprofit organization offers paid internships in Scandinavia in engineering, teaching English as a foreign language, business, and agricultural fields. Apply for internships by late Dec. Fee $50. ASF also assists with obtaining work permits for Scandinavia.

 

AIPT / IAESTE: 410-997-2200, www.aipt.org. Nonprofit organization provides paid internships in over 80 countries in engineering and science (apply by late Dec.). They can also assist in obtaining work permits for career-related practical training in most fields for both students and college graduates.

BUNAC Work Abroad Programs, (for working in Britain, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and volunteering in South Africa, Peru, and Cambodia). Contact; 800-GO-BUNAC; www.bunac.org. Nonprofit organization provides a work permit and job-hunting assistance. Program fee of $290 (Britain) or somewhat more for other countries. U.S. college students and recent graduates (within 1 semester) eligible for Britain. Non-students aged 18-30 eligible for Australia and (18-35) New Zealand.

 

CDS International, Inc. Free booklet and applications available from CDS: 212-497-3500, www.cdsintl.org. Nonprofit organization offers overseas practical training internships for Americans in a variety of fields including business, engineering, and technology. Programs offered in Germany, Argentina, Russia, Spain, and Switzerland are intended for young professionals seeking to gain international work experience. CDS also assists and sponsors work permits (for a fee of $300-$500). Most internships are paid.

 

CEI - Club des 4 vents—Work in France Program. See information on this Paris-based organization online at www.cei4vents.com. Up to 4-month internships or short-term work in France. Can also include French lessons if needed. Company can provide placement for a fee or you can find your own.

 

CIEE Work Abroad Programs. Application from CIEE Work Abroad: 800-40-study, work@ciee.org, www.ciee.org. Nonprofit organization provides a work permit and job-hunting assistance in Australia, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand, and teaching in China and Thailand. Program fees from $350 up, depending on the country. Some programs require student status.

Nonprofit program offers placements for paid work abroad, internships, English teaching, working on farms, volunteering and au pair in Australia, Belgium, Costa Rica, France, Germany, Great Britain, India, Netherlands, Norway, Peru, South Africa, and Spain.

 

International Cooperative Education Program. Free information at www.icemenlo.com. Organization offers paid summer internships for students with knowledge of foreign languages (German, French, Italian, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese) in Europe, Asia, and South America. U.S. or Canadian citizens preferred. Apply by February. Fee of $950.

 

Internships International. Free information at www.internshipsinternational.org. Organization offers unpaid, not-for-credit internship placements in all fields for college graduates (or seniors who need an internship for graduation) in many countries in Asia, Africa, Europe, and South America; plus Australia and New Zealand. Fee of $1100.

 

LEAPNow: Lifelong Education Alternatives & Programs. Information available at www.leapnow.org, 707-829-1142. LEAPNow offers low-cost internships, volunteer positions, work exchanges, and experiential academic programs in 129 countries and the U.S. Over 20,000 options and 20 years experience custom tailoring programs for people of all ages and backgrounds. Academic credit available.

 

Univ. of Minnesota Career Connections: Career Placement Opportunities in China. For program information see www.chinacenter.umn.edu/careerconnect, 612-624-1002. Offers paid, 6- or 12-month internship placements in China for recent college graduates who have had at least two years of college-level Mandarin. Placement fee of $1,500 (6 mo.) or $2,000 (1 yr) includes insurance and support.
