A Cactus Volunteer Programme is the unique opportunity to combine a language course with volunteer work in South America. After taking a 4 week Spanish or Portuguese (Brazil) course at one of our approved schools, you can take a minimum 4 week volunteer placement with one of the many local organisations we work with. Work can be in any of the following areas: social, education, healthcare or nature. This is a wonderful chance to experience local life first-hand and give a little something to the community. Volunteering can be for anyone, from those taking a year out after university to those simply wanting a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life back home. One thing for sure is that you will come back with a real sense of personal achievement, to say nothing of a newfound confidence in the language.

Cusco is known the world over as the enchanting “belly-button” of the Inca civilization, and is the principle doorway to one of the great wonders of the world: Machu Picchu. But the real charm and the challenge comes from the orphans with whom you will be working. The orphanage caters primarily to deaf children, though some have other challenges. These children are hungry for human contact, love and care. Their smiles will melt your heart. Volunteers are needed to help them get ready in the morning before school, to take them on cultural outings, and other such activities. During their school time, and due to staggered “shifts” you have ample freetime.

Volunteer in Paraguay with Amigos de las Américas (AMIGOS)
Paraguarí, Paraguay - Household Sanitation
Volunteers will lead household and environmental health promotion projects that will include the construction of 15-20 latrines. They will also facilitate educational activities with youth counterparts for 5–12 year old children (topics include nutrition, cultural exchange, recycling, and dental hygiene). Paraguarí is made up of fertile forested lowlands, with hills in the northeastern area. The land is flat and rolling, with small plateaus and hills spread out in the distance. Not only will Volunteers have the chance to improve their Spanish fluency, but they will also pick up some Guaraní, an indigenous language used in social settings in host communities.

Volunteer in Paraguay with Amigos de las Américas (AMIGOS)
San Pedro, Paraguay- Reforestation and Nutrition
Volunteers will educate families about nutrition, help construct fuel-efficient stoves and will promote reforestation activities. The stoves elevate the fire off of the floor, close it so that children don’t burn themselves and vent smoke outside of the home. The fuel-efficient stoves, made from local materials, provide immediate health benefits by reducing burns and respiratory illnesses.

The people of Bahia, a fusion of Africans, Native Americans and Europeans, are carefree and upbeat, always looking for a good time. However when you get outside of the noise and traffic of the tourist complexes of Brazil, you’ll have a chance to expand your mind to see the incredible beauty and challenges of the region. The program takes place in a little village with approximately 500 inhabitants, in the state of Bahia. The community faces a number of challenges: Poverty; alcoholism; unemployment; absence of basic infrastructure (sewage and treated water for instance); local school maintenance (materials, food for the kids and transportation); lack of medical and dental assistance; and lack of a space to display, market and sell local crafts.
