AJWS Volunteer Summer is a dynamic, hands-on summer experience for current high school juniors and seniors, college students and recent college graduates (ages 16-25) that combines rewarding volunteer work with study of social justice and sustainable development, all from a Jewish perspective. Peace Corps: Give and the World Gives Back!
The Peace Corps, a federal government agency established in 1961 by John F. Kennedy, that sends volunteers on two-year assignments to 70 developing countries around the world. Right now, more than 7,000 Americans are working overseas in programs ranging from environmental education, community services and English teaching to health, business development and agriculture extension.
Benefits
An enriching cross-cultural experience is only one of the many benefits Peace Corps can offer. Volunteers receive practical work experience, a living stipend, a $6,075 readjustment allowance upon completion of service, transportation to and from their country of service, complete medical and dental coverage, job placement assistance, and in some cases, deferment of student loans. Twenty-four vacation days are available to you as one of the benefits that you are able to use as you wish. You may return home, travel around your country of service or visit other countries. There are some restrictions, such as the first 6 months and the last 3 months of service and any other restrictions that the country director deems necessary.
Qualifications
You need to be 18 years of age or older and be a U.S. Citizen. Most Peace Corps assignments require a bachelor's degree, although substantial experience in certain fields can also enable you to qualify. In addition, foreign language skills and community service work enhance a candidate's competitiveness.
